Web Spotlight browser extension ยท Effective July 20, 2026
๐ No data collected ยท Everything stays on your device
Web Spotlight is designed to be private by default. This policy explains what the extension
accesses, why, and what happens to that information. In short: the extension does not
collect, transmit, sell, or share any of your data. Everything stays on your device.
Summary
No data is sent to us or to any third-party server.
No accounts, no sign-in, no tracking, no analytics.
All information the extension uses stays in your browser, on your computer.
What the extension accesses, and why
To provide a unified search across your browser, Web Spotlight accesses the following
locally, on your device only:
Your saved bookmarks, tags, and notes โ created by you inside the extension and stored locally so they persist between sessions.
Your browser bookmarks โ read so they can appear in search results.
Your open tabs โ read so you can search them and switch to the one you choose.
Your browsing history โ read so recently visited pages appear in search results.
The current page โ the extension shows its search overlay on the active page when you press its keyboard shortcut. It does not read, copy, or transmit the page's content.
Site icons (favicons) โ loaded from your browser's own local favicon cache. No external requests are made to fetch icons.
How this information is used
This information is used solely to display search results and to open or save pages at your
request, in real time, within your browser. It is never transmitted off your device.
Data storage
Bookmarks, tags, and notes you create are stored using your browser's local extension storage
(chrome.storage.local) on your computer. You can view, filter, and delete them at any
time from the extension's options page. Removing the extension deletes this data.
Data sharing and selling
We do not:
Collect or transmit your data to any server.
Sell or transfer your data to third parties.
Use your data for advertising, creditworthiness, lending, or any purpose unrelated to the extension's single purpose.
Share your data with anyone.
Permissions
The extension requests only the permissions needed for its search-and-save features:
storage, bookmarks, tabs, history,
activeTab, scripting, favicon, and host access to display
its overlay on the pages you visit. Each is used exclusively for the local, on-device
functionality described above.
Changes to this policy
If the extension's data practices ever change (for example, if optional cloud sync were added in
the future), this policy will be updated before that functionality ships, and the change will be
reflected on the extension's store listing.
